Novell Announces Full Windows Functionality for NetWare Lite
New Windows Interface Improves Peer-to-Peer Integration with the Network
and its Services.
Provo, Utah., -- February 10,1993--Novell, Inc., announced NetWare Lite
v1.1 for DOS and Windows, an upgraded version of its award winning
desktop networking solution, which provides users with a means of easily
managing their network without having to leave Windows. NetWare Lite
v1.1 for DOS and Windows provides users with seamless integration of
NetWare Lite peer-to-peer networks with the Windows graphical environment
and is an easy to user, inexpensive networking solution for small
business and departmental workgroups within an enterprise network.
"Users who have asked for improved Peer-to-Peer desktop integration with
the network and its services now no longer have to exit Windows to DOS in
order to perform network management functions. And with the new
interface, when a desktop server exits Windows, the network still remains
fully functional," said John Edwards, executive vice president and
general manager, Desktop Systems Group. "NetWare Lite is a strategic
product within Novell's NetWare Desktop Systems strategy where our goal
is to help users leverage their desktop investments and increase their
productivity by connecting them seamlessly into the networking
environment across all platforms," he said.
NetWare Lite is an ideal solution for users who need to communicate
between departmental workgroups within an enterprise network, or between
desktops within small businesses because NetWare Lite can be integrated
with NetWare and its suite of robust and comprehensive services. By
incorporating NetWare Lite into small workgroups or within large networks
working in the DOS or Windows environment, and can better utilize
existing desktop hardware and software resources.
NetWare Lite v1.1 for DOS and Windows allows desktop resources to be
shared on the NetWare Lite network, and the entire NetWare Lite network
to be managed from any network computer. Through a single login, users
have access to all resources and servers on the network. In the event
that a server on the network exits from the network, NetWare Lite will
automatically reconnect all prior connections when the server is rebooted
or power is regained.
Primary features of NetWare Lite v1.1 for DOS and Windows include the
following:
■ Full Windows Support -- Supports Microsoft Windows v3.0 and v3.1 on
servers and client workstations in any mode including Enhanced 386,
allowing users to run NetWare Lite and Windows concurrently; also
includes drag and drop functionality within Windows v3.0 and v3.1.
■ Windows Independence -- Any DOS or Windows machine can share and
use network resources thus acting as a client, server or both: also
eliminates the need to upgrade all systems to Windows in order to
install the network - protecting hardware and software investments.
■ Configuration Flexibility -- Easy integration of workgroup
application software such as e-mail, calendaring, scheduling;
compatible with most DOS or Windows applications, and more than 200
networking applications.
■ Network Management -- Ability to manage the network from any
workstation; adding to the flexibility of administering NetWare Lite
networks.
■ Single Network LOGIN -- LOGIN to the network from any workstation
and access all shared resources with a single LOGIN and password -
separate LOGIN for each peer resource is not required.
■ Memory Requirements -- NetWare Lite v1.1. for DOS and Windows has
small memory footprint, 28kb per workstation and 56kb per server.
■ Disk Caching -- Read-ahead disk caching and support of third-party
disk caching for added performance.
■ Drag and Drop Functionality -- Users can connect to a network
resource such as directories or printers by dragging and dropping
the resource icon within Windows.
Accolades
NetWare Lite v1.1 is a stable and successful desktop networking solution
as recognized by key industry publications. The product was the
recipient of Network World's Enterprise Technology award for 1992, the
1993 winner of LAN Times Reader's Choice award, and was a finalist in PC
Computing's MVP awards. NetWare Lite v1.1 for DOS and Windows is the
first step in the evolution of products to the Personal NetWare family,
which will include cross platform peer-to-peer networking, enhanced
integration with NetWare's robust and comprehensive services, mobile
support and network-management capabilities.
Pricing and Availability
NetWare Lite v1.1 for DOS and Windows is available through Novell's sales
channels for a suggested retail price of $99.00 (U.S.). Current NetWare
Lite users wishing to add full Windows functionality to their existing
version of NetWare Lite v1.1 may upgrade an entire network for $30 by
calling 1-800-UPDATE1 (1-800-873-2831).
For limited time, users may also purchase NetWare Lite v1.1 for DOS and
Windows bundled with DR DOS 6.0 for a suggested retail price of $129.00
(U.S.)
NetWare Lite is also available in network starter kits from partners such
as Eagle, Ansel, ZComm and Xircom. The starter kits include NetWare Lite
networking software, LAN cards and cables. Various third party
applications such as email are available with these starter kits.
NetWare Lite v1.1 is currently available in English, Spanish, Italian,
French, German, and Japanese. The Windows enhancements are currently
available in English, and in March native versions will follow in
Spanish, Italian, French, German and Japanese. For pricing outside the
U.S. and Canada, users should contact their local Novell reseller.
